Burrito Buggy to take winter hiatus

By Terry Smith

The venerable uptown Burrito Buggy will close for winter quarter and then reopen in the spring, owner Paul Wildeck confirmed on Monday.

Wildeck, who has owned the popular vending business for 25 years, said that he is trying to sell the Burrito Buggy to someone who will carry on the tradition.

Wildeck said that he has established a new career as a certified financial planner for Ameriprise Financial Service on West State Street in Athens, and just doesn't have the time or devotion to keep the buggy going.

"It's been a great business for a really long time. I'm just interested in other pursuits at this time," he said.

Wildeck said he appreciates the loyalty of his customers, and the buggy will be back operating for them in the spring.

The vending business probably will close for the winter this Saturday, he said.

In the past, according to Wildeck, he has closed the vending business during OU's winter break, but never for the entire winter. He said having it off-line for that long will actually give him an opportunity to do repairs and maintenance that it's been difficult to perform when the business is operating.

He said the buggy has about 10 employees, and feels bad for them that he's shutting down for the winter.

This is another sad sign of just how Athens has changes in the last 15 years. In the mid-90's the 'buggy row' was a thriving spot, with multiple businesses. The late-night crowd after the bars closed down was always fun and exciting. Now, even in the best weather, the late-night crowd is just a dribble. The uptown has shifted, with the busier end being down near Mill Street. Not nearly as many people walk home past the South end of Court Street anymore.

During my three years in grad school at OU, the Burrito Buggy was always there for great food almost any time. Every time I get back to Athens, I always stop. I hope someone picks up the tradition. If not, a piece of Athens will be lost.

Didn't Summit at Coates offer free Burritos for a year with the signing of a lease on a ridgetop condo?

If you want to know another thing that forced the Burito Buggy to do this, ask the Hot Dogs for Jesus crowd that literally harasses customers to not buy food.

The hot dog for Jesus crow killed the buggy? Mill Street? Did you read the article? The burrito buggy is closing because the guy who owns the it got a job that does not involve selling burritos to drunk people, or hiring people who are willing to sell burritos to drunk people. Anyway. I hope someone buys it, because I love those burritos.
