Local Dem Party chair issues statement about voter fraud allegations

By Athens NEWS Staff

Athens County Democratic Party Chair Susan Gwinn issued the following statement Tuesday afternoon. While she addresses GOP allegations that the OU College Democrats sought to pay people for their votes Tuesday, she doesn't address the issue that the Athens County Prosecutor is investigating -- whether paying party canvassers $5 a head to bring "friends" to vote is illegal. That's what the student Democrats said the county party had encouraged them to do. -- Athens NEWS Editor Terry Smith

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- November 3, 2009

Democratic Chair Disavows Voter's were to Be Paid

"At no time has either myself or anyone in the local Democratic Party suggested that voters would be paid to vote in today's Election. No money has ever been paid to someone to vote or will be paid to someone to vote. The suggestion that there was a plan to pay voters is unfounded. To suggest that such illegal activity was planned by either College Democrats or the local Democratic Party is ludicrous." Susan Gwinn, Chair ACDP

Who were the friends suppose to collect from? Gwinn acts like there was not anyone who would be benefiting in particular, so why not pay everyone and not just the 4th ward. If people want to vote for a conscience reason, they don't need to be enticed with money (duh). Its sad when a person can no longer tell when something is not only illegal but just plain wrong.

I think Susan should get a job with ACORN.

In this day and age if someone is that naive and apathetic about their voting rights that $5 given to a friend is enough to get them to the polls then they should lose their voting rights because they are throwing their vote away on someone they know nothing about, but of course their friends are telling them to vote for. I guess I am crazy to think individuals 18+ should be able to consciously think about issues and choose a candidate without being told to. Oh well. Looks like the $5 nonsense was enough for some friends to drag others out to vote for Fahl. She won by a mere 36 votes. Glad they targeted the 4th ward I bet. This whole thing wreaks of scum. Illegal or not it just gives me a bad taste in my mouth. If this is how people of my own party are going to operate then I guess I'm done registering as democrat.
