To the Editor:
My name is Sgt. Cliff Evener, the S4 NCO for Team Orthus, a deploying Ohio Army National Guard unit currently mobilizing out of Fort Riley, Kansas for an Operational Mentor and Liaison Team mission to Afghanistan. I am sending this e-mail to inform you of the great support that was just given to us by two Athens businesses.
Here at Fort Riley we train hard, very hard, every day in preparation for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. The food here is... well, I'ts Army food. A few of us on this small team are from the Athens area, and one night we had a discussion on how perfect it would be to have a large Avalanche pizza. As I thought about it more, just to see what they would say, I sent Avalanche Pizza an e-mail explaining our situation. I very quickly received a reply from the owner, John Gutekanst, asking "what kind do we want, when do we need them, and where do you want them sent?" I was amazed.
Even further, I received another e-mail from Diagnostic Hybrids HR program specialist Isabelle Cancellare. She explained to me that when she heard of "Operation Pizza Delivery," that DHI and some of their military veteran employees could not wait to help. DHI supplied all the packaging of the pizzas and took care of the shipping.
Without giving away operational security information, we are VERY close to flying overseas, and today, just in time, we received the amazing care package from Avalanche Pizza and DHI. It was pure joy for all of us who had been working so hard the past two months to have a great feast before we leave Fort Riley.
The support that the owner of Avalanche Pizza and DHI gave us was remarkable. Included in their e-mails were the hopes and prayers for all of us and how honored they were to do this great deed for us.
I hope that The Athens NEWS can find some room in one of its issues to give a shout out to these two businesses and the support they gave us. I snapped some pictures of all the soldiers during the preparation of the pizza, and then the feast, along with a team photo.
Also, as an Athens "townie" myself, I've always been a reader of The A-News. Thanks for all you do!
