Another OU student falls to his death

By Jim Phillips

Athens Police are investigating the death of an Ohio University student who apparently fell accidentally from a second-floor deck at his Athens off-campus home late Saturday night.

Matthew S. Smith, 20, of Loveland near Cincinnati, is the second OU student killed in a fall this year.

According to a police report, officers responded at 11:41 p.m. Saturday to 97 Playground Drive, where Smith lived (near Seigfred Hall and Stewart Street). They were unable to revive the student. Smith was transported to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m., police reported.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Montgomery County Coroner's office.

On OU's Web site, Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi expressed "deepest condolences" to Smith's family and friends. The site noted that Smith had completed his sophomore year in OU's College of Arts and Sciences.

The OU site also reminded students that they can call Counseling and Psychological Services 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 593-1616 to speak with a counselor.

On April 29 another OU student, 20-year-old Eric Hansen, from Seven Hills near Cleveland, died after falling from a fourth-floor window in the Weld House dormitory where he lived.

An autopsy revealed that Hansen had ingested psilocybin, a hallucinogenic drug, before his death.

I didn't know "the police" revived injured students who were dying. I thought the EMS and the hospital did that. Who knew?

It's not hard to learn CPR. In fact, "oustudent" they offer that very class. Maybe, if you're thinking of going into the law enforcement field, you should check it out...

Matt was a fine young man from a fine family who tragically died too soon. His many friends and his loved ones miss him and will need all the comforting and support they can get.

Most police officers in the U.S. are certified first responders, able to give advanced first aid in the absence of EMTs or paramedics. Within the limits of their training, they could possibly revive an injured person before medics arrive. Unfortunately, this person's injuries were too severe.
