The Ohio University community has suffered the loss of a second university student in as many weeks. The OU Outlook stated in a release that senior Andrew T. Land died in a plane crash along with his father, Michael, on Sunday afternoon in Huntington, W.Va.
According to the Huntington Herald-Dispatch, the Lands were returning to their hometown of Richland, Mich., near Kalamazoo in a family-owned single-engine plane when the crash occurred.
Land, 23, was a media management major in the Scripps College of Communication, Outlook reported. He was scheduled to graduate next winter and planned to pursue a career in broadcast management.
Land reportedly comes from a distinguished family in the broadcasting business. His paternal grandparents, June and Allan Land, are the namesakes of a School of Media Arts and Studies scholarship, which is given annually to students pursuing a career in broadcasting. The late Allan Land spent more than 50 years in the broadcasting business. Meanwhile, uncle Eric Land is a 1973 Ohio University alumnus and former president and general manager of WFLA-TV in Tampa, Fla.
