'Streaking' on ESPN could win $1M

By Athens NEWS Staff

This week in school I scored a 96 percent on my Interdisciplinary Art quiz. I pulled an 88 percent on my Math 113 test. And I got a 70 percent on my ESPN exam. And it was true and false.
Bogus. I studied the hardest for ESPN.

My friends and I have become obsessed with the game on ESPN.com called "śStreak for the Cash" where you have a 50-50 chance at winning $1 million each day. All you have to do is pick the winner of pre-determined sporting events.

It's so easy even a caveman can do it.

The rules of the game are simple, first you create an account (Doves Dynasty) on the site (free of charge) so you can track your progress and then you start picking games on the Web site.

They provide a pick selection from nearly every sport and typically offer about 10 picks a day for you to choose from. You can only have one pick in progress at a time but can pick more than one if the games don't overlap. The "streaker" with the most picks correct in a row at the end of the contest is eligible for a $1 million prize.

Last Wednesday, not only did I continue my streak to a personal high of eight by picking the New York Yankees (Sabathia) over the Baltimore Orioles (Guthrie), I also picked nine other games that day (they don't count towards my steak online), just to see how well this sports writer could really score after really doing his homework.

First pick of the day came from the world of golf. The pick was who would have the lowest second-round score at the TPC Sawgrass, Zach Johnson or Sergio Garcia. Although Garcia has a lower scoring average (70.45 overall, 69.48 PGA tour) than Johnson (70.95 overall, 69.96 PGA tour), I went with my gut and picked Johnson for the win. Johnson shot a 71 to Garcia's 73 and Britton's streak is 1-0.

I'm no Barry Melrose when it comes to hockey, but I'm not an idiot. The first game was the 7 p.m. matchup between the two best players in the league, Alex Ovechkin (Washington Capitals) and Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins). With the series at 2-1 in favor of the Capitals and the game moving back to Pittsburgh, I had to go with the Pens. In the regular season, Crosby only had one goal against the Capitals, but he had six assists. So far in the playoffs he has had five goals against the Capitals with three assists. Penguins win 5-3. Britton's Streak 2-0.

But after the Boston Bruins fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1, Britton's streak was 2-1.

In baseball, I went 2-2 picking the Yankees over the Orioles and the Rangers over the White Sox correct and flubbing the Royals vs. Angels game and the Cubs vs. Brewers game to put Britton's streak at 4-3.

In basketball, I was perfect picking Kobe Bryant and the Lakers over Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets and Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic over everyone besides Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics. Britton's Streak 6-3.

I rounded off the day flipping a coin for Joey Logano to finish better than Brad Keselowski in the NASCAR race in Darlington, and for once in my life tails didn't fail. Britton's streak ends at 7-3.

This game is so much fun, but I can't help but wish that Ohio University had its own version that went a little like this.

Tuesday, May 12 "“ Who will win this matchup? (Baseball) Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Ohio University.

Tommy Freeman half court shots "“ Fewer than five attempts or more than five attempts to make one?

Thursday, May 14 "“ Who will win this matchup? (Baseball) Buffalo Bulls vs. Ohio University.

Who will win in a game of Madden 2009 football? Jim Schaus vs. Roderick McDavis.

If I end up picking about 20 more games right in the next month, come find me, because that $1 million will be burning a hole in my pocket worse than MC Hammer.
