Not your old Athens Planned Parenthood "“ Planned Parenthood of Southeast Ohio [PPSEO] now offers new services and better care. Since the summer of 2007 and our move to a new location, 1005 E. State St., PPSEO has provided improved access to reproductive health services "“ family planning, contraception, and the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. All services are confidential. Information and education are available for individuals to make responsible reproductive health decisions.
To be more specific, PPSEO offers patients HIV-AIDS tests using saliva. Results are available in 20 minutes. Since September 2008, the process for detecting cervical cancer has been enhanced. Conventional glass-slide Pap smears have been replaced with ThinPrep liquid-based technology, which is more sensitive and specific. Testing for Human Papilloma Virus [HPV] can be obtained from the same ThinPrep specimen, thus eliminating the need for patients to be called for a follow-up visit.
In the near future, PPSEO plans to offer Gardasil, the vaccine for HPV. Vaccination against HPV is recommended for women up to age 26 to reduce their subsequent risk for developing cervical cancer later in life. In the future, testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea for both males and females will be available using a sample of the patient's urine. Newer, better ways to treat some of the sexually transmitted diseases are being implemented with less discomfort. eliminating the need for frequent return visits.
All services provided at Planned Parenthood of Southeast Ohio are available on a sliding-fee scale. The sliding-fee scale is based on a patient's income and family size. PPSEO accepts most commercial insurance, and all Medicaid/Medicare- and Medicaid-sponsored health plans.
