Sheriff arrests 4 in man's shooting death

By Athens NEWS Staff
The Athens County Sheriff's office has arrested three adults and a juvenile from the Columbus area, after a fatal shooting early Sunday during what Sheriff Pat Kelly described as an attempted robbery of a New Marshfield home.

The shooting took place around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the sheriff, and occurred at a New Marshfield Road residence.

Kelly said that the man who was shot and later died at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital was not a resident of the home, but had apparently arrived there while an exchange of gunfire was going on. Victim Donnie Putnam reportedly lived in Dexter, Ohio.

The news release said search warrants have been executed on "several residences" in connection with the investigation, and officers have seized drugs. Kelly said all the residences are in New Marshfield.

The three adults and juvenile were all in custody as of yesterday afternoon, though Kelly had not released their names, and as of about 12:30 p.m., they had not yet been formally charged. He also would not release the name of the home's resident.

Kelly described the arrestees as two adult males, an adult female and a 17-year-old male.

Asked whether he considers the shooting drug-related, Kelly said, "I'm fairly certain it is."
