Dr. Robert Emerson Main, age 93, formerly of Athens, general practitioner and surgeon, passed away early Thursday morning, May 8, 2008 at Friendship Village Health Center, Dublin. Born April 9, 1915 in Delaware County, he was the son of the late Wilbur & Josie Bishop Main,
A graduate of Delaware High School, Ohio University and The Ohio State University Medical School, he was a practicing physician and surgeon in Athens for over forty years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Athens Country Club, Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club both of Athens, Athens Foundation, Past President of the Athens County Medical Society and Past Health Commissioner of the Athens City/County Health Department. Dr. Main was an avid golfer, active in the anti-smoking campaign and a passionate farmer.
He was a member of the first ROTC class at Ohio University. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre.
Dr. Main is survived by two daughters- Linda (Pete) Clark of Albany and Theresa (Al) Walton of New Plymouth; three sons- Robert E. (Bette) Main, Jr. of Ashville, N.C., Dr. Tom (Leslie) Main of Columbus and Bill (Kathleen) Main of LaJolla, California; thirteen grandchildren- Melissa (Tim) Stickler, Angela (Jeremy) Roberts, Heather (Dr. Ben) Adeyemi, Connor Main, Meredith Main, Andrea Gogel, Amy (Tom) Gaither, William Main, Jennifer Main, Brandon (Valerie) Elliott, Katherine (Dave) Farris, Bobbie Walton and Tyler Walton; sixteen great grandchildren; two sisters- Rosella (Harold) Ault of Delaware and Verona Mackley of Bradenton, Fla.; also surviving is a special friend, Ruth Froede of Columbus.
Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine Sprague Main in 2002; three brothers- John, Rodney and George Main.
Funeral Mass will be recited Monday 11:00AM at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Athens with Msgr. Patrick Gaughan as celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call Sunday 3-5 and 7-9PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Vigil for the Deceased will be Sunday 9:00PM at the funeral home.
