Coy Darah Higginbotham, 86, Athens, went to be with the Lord Saturday November 7, 2009, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. Born December 11, 1922 in Charleston, WV., he was the son of the late Enos Bly and Stella Elizabeth Smith Higginbotham. During WWII he served with the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division in the South Pacific on Siapan, Okinawa and in the 1st Landings on Japan as Liberation Forces. While in the service he earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Victory Medals, Good Conduct Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars. Coy was a former member of the Pilgrim Advent Christian Church near Sissonville, WV., he attended the Zaleski Free-Will Baptist and Albany United Methodist Churches. He was a 50 year member and past master of the Albany Masonic Lodge #723 F & AM, a 50 year member of the Ohio Eastern Star Albany Chapter 558, York Rite Bodies of Athens, Athens County Shrine Club, charter member of Albany VFW Post #9893, life member of Athens DAV #37, Albany Senior Citizens Club. He was retired from Abex Corp. of Athens after 30 years as inspector. His greatest love was picking his Gibson guitar and singing gospel songs, he was one of the original Green Valley Boys String Band for nearly 30 years. He is survived by his loving wife Kathryn, two daughters, Pamela (Ronald) Stansberry of Londonderry, and April (Doug) Lowther of Albany; three step-sons, Gary Nelson of Albany, and John Nelson and Dennis Nelson, both of Florida; seven grandchildren, Bruce Stansberry, Rebecca (Butch) Lyons, Stephanie (Tim) Walker, Wendy (Curt) Cline, Chet Lowther, Wade (Kate) Midkiff, and Svea (Brad) Maxwell; two step-grandchildren, Randy Nelson of Florida and Kimberly (Mike) Beecher of Cincinnati; and several great-grandchildren; brother Cody James Higginbotham of Portsmouth; sisters, Iona Ross of Albany, Texie Irene Powers of Newport, NC.; aunts, Pearl Smith of Dunbar, WV. and Eileen Smith of Iowa; sister-in-laws Dorothy and Darlene Higginbotham; and several cousins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Madge Elizabeth McVey Higginbotham, a daughter Jennie Midkiff, sisters Althea Eola and Kitty Iola, and a brother Doy. Services will be Wednesday at 1 PM at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home with Rev. Ferrell Rood and Dr. Walt Goble officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery, with military services by Albany VFW Post 9893, Athens VFW Post 3477, and Athens KT Crossen Post 21 American Legion.
