Athens soon to add another dog park

Athens will soon have two dog parks. The city currently has a dog park at the West State Street Park, and it’s a popular place for city residents to take their dogs to run.

Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl and Rich Campitelli, director of arts, parks and recreation for the city, announced at Wiehl’s Wednesday press conference that the baseball field near the Athens Community Center and the city pool will be turned into a dog park in June.

Campitelli explained that it will not cost much to turn it into a dog park, as most of the field is fenced already. New gates will be put in, and the water line will be moved so water will be available inside the fenced-in area, Campitelli said.

Parking is available next to the new dog park, which can also be accessed from the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway.

Also at the press conference, Campitelli said he hopes to have the recreation department hold more special events this summer, such as special competitions at the city Skatepark and sports activities. He said he also plans to work to find more funding for the Community Center and for ARTS/West.
