May 6, 2008
The Athens Police Department issued a “public-safety alert” early Tuesday after a female OU student reported an attempted sexual assault as she was walking home from a party on Franklin Avenue.
According to the alert, e-mailed to the local media at 7:12 a.m., “an unknown male suspect grabbed a female OU student by the arm and dragged her into a driveway on Franklin Avenue (at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday). After throwing the female to the ground, the male suspect attempted to pull her pants off. The female fought the attacker and was able to escape. She then ran to a residence where a friend notified APD.”
After receiving the report, officers began patrolling both the Franklin Avenue area and other student neighborhoods in the area, according to the police report. As of the report’s release, nobody matching the suspect’s description had been located, the report said.
Police described the attacker as white, around 30 years old, thin, muscular build, average height, clean-shaven, and with no visible tattoos or piercings. The man was wearing white tennis shoes, khaki shorts, black T-shirt with white Nike swoop on the left side of the chest and a black baseball cap, and has unknown hair and eye color.
The victim believes she was attacked near the last few homes on the south end of Franklin, near Carpenter Street, the report said.
Anyone with information about the attack is urged to notify the Athens Police Department.
