United Appeal raises nearly $190,000 locally through annual campaign

May 5, 2008

A celebration luncheon was held at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital to recognize contributions totaling $189,730 that have been pledged for United Appeal’s 13 partner agencies this year, announced Pam Harvey, United Appeal’s local executive director.

Two Community Teamwork Awards were presented, recognizing the strength of United Appeal supporters who work together to increase funds raised for local non-profit agencies, according to a press release.

“Marketing and financial assistance were provided by College Book Store and Follett’s University Bookstore in a creative partnership that helped kick off our campaign last fall,” Harvey said in the release.

The bookstores partnered with Ohio University to make and sell “Game On” shirts for the 2007 Homecoming game.

Each book store contributed to United Appeal $3 of the $8 price of every shirt sold, netting a donation of $2,000.

“In addition to their significant matching gift employee-giving campaign, Diagnostic Hybrids reached out to the community at-large to help everyone buy into the idea of giving to United Appeal,” Harvey said in the release.

Diagnostic Hybrids, Inc. partnered with The Athens NEWS to run a series of ads in February to remind community members that United Appeal was running its fundraising campaign.

United Appeal also presented commemorative gifts to Bill Walker, past United Appeal president, and to Sandy Shirey, in recognition of her retirement as executive director of American Red Cross’s Athens County Chapter.
