Police ID students found dead in Athens apartment

May 4, 2008

After nearly 36 hours, the Athens Police Sunday night finally identified the two college students who were found dead early Saturday in an Athens apartment. However, police sources still declined to speculate what happened to the two, pending an autopsy

Police identified the two as Christopher A. Theil, 22, of Athens, and Kelly P. Armbruster, 22, of Powell. On Armbruster's Facebook.com page, she identified Theil as her boyfriend. Police earlier IDed Theil as a Hocking College student and Armbruster as a student at OU.

While police haven't said what might have happened to the two, an APD officer told WOUB radio Sunday morning that community members should not be in fear for their safety in the aftermath of the two deaths, an apparent suggestion that police were not looking for a killer.

Another officer, APD Lt. Ralph Harvey, in a phone interview Sunday morning, declined to comment on details of the ongoing investigation, but did say authorities were “not ruling out any possibilities at this point.” The autopsy report is the key to finding out what happened, he said. He had no comment when asked whether drugs were involved.

Otherwise, Harvey referred to the one-paragraph news release that he sent out via e-mail at 2:31 p.m. on Saturday.

At 6:18 a.m. Saturday, according to the release, APD and SEOEMS were called to an apartment at Riverpark Towers, a student apartment complex near OU’s South Green. On arrival, they found the two students dead. The bodies have been sent to the Montgomery County Medical Examiners Office for autopsies, the report said.

Harvey, who was heading home after working the night shift, said public identification of the two students was awaiting confirmation that next of kin had been notified. The identification came in the form of a release from the APD shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday.

Though the identities of the deceased students was delayed on Sunday, students from OU and other college campuses and cities had been posting memorial messages since Saturday afternoon on the Facebook “wall” of Armbruster.

On her profile page on the social-networking site, Armbruster listed as her favorite quote the following from rap artist Atmosphere: "If I had a choice i'd never want to live forever, I can't imagine running a race with no finish line, just let me keep my pace and make the most of my time. I love giving but i'm bad at receiving, I prefer to be the one bleeding"
