Athens hires new director for Arts, Parks & Rec Department

May 1, 2008

Rich Campitelli has been hired as the new Arts, Parks and Recreation director for the city of Athens.

Campitelli has served as the assistant director since April 2000, and replaces former director Kevin Schwartzhoff, who left the position in 2007.

Campitelli previously worked for more than six years for the Hocking Valley Community Residential Center in Nelsonville.

He earned both his bachelor’s degree in recreation and his master’s degree in physical education from Ohio University.

Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl made the announcement about Campitelli at his weekly press conference on Wednesday, and said that he interviewed five candidates from around the region for the position.

The Arts, Parks and Recreation Department is having budget problems, and it will be helpful to have Campitelli, who has experience in the department, working to resolve the problems, Wiehl said.

Campitelli will be asked to look for ways to reduce expenses and increase revenue, he added.

Wiehl said he does not know yet if the city will fill the now empty assistant director position. He added that the recreation department is not one of his strengths, and said he will rely a great deal on Campitelli for his leadership and experience.
