Sale of some assets of the Kerr Beverage Co. in Lorain, Huron and Erie counties will probably have no impact on the company’s Athens County operation, Kerr Distributing, according to an official of the company that is buying the facilities.
"It doesn’t have," reported John Fleming, president and CEO of the Columbus-based Superior Beverage Group. "As far as I know, the facilities in Athens and Chillicothe will be business as usual."
Fleming stressed, however, that he is not a spokesman for Kerr.
Ken Kerr III, owner of Kerr Distributing in Athens, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
According to a report in the The Morning Journal June 18, 56 employees of Kerr Beverage are expected to lose their jobs in a layoff when the company finalizes sales of assets in northeast Ohio, to Superior Beverage. The newspaper serves northern Ohio.
The story cited a letter from Kerr Executive Vice President Ronald Strickmaker to the Lorain County commissioners, in which Strickmaker stated that the closing of the Lorain County facilities would take place on or around July 17.
The letter also reportedly stated that Kerr’s distribution rights in Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties are being sold to the Findlay, Ohio-based NWO Beverage, Inc.
The Kerr Web site at www.kerrcompanies.com lists three locations, in Athens, Chillicothe and Lorain.
