September 27, 2007
Have you been wondering why your four-piece band still can't get a gig at any decent venue in Athens? You've dropped off your badly recorded cassette tape at every uptown bar but still no one calls. There is a reason and a solution. To separate your band from the rest, here's a few things you can do.>>

The ups and downs of human existence are a pain in the tush. I suppose that's why the Eastern religions strive for balance. We Americans love our drama and our ecstatic moments. We tend to medicate away the bad things. Since I have run out of my prescription of Repressitol(TM) and the doctor won't give a prescription of Effitol(TM), I guess I'll have to plow through the tough stuff. Oh well.>>

I love the fall - from grace, that is. Nothing like picking yourself up and dusting yourself off and jumping back into the game that is life. I also love the fall - autumn, that is. The heat dissipates and my brain starts to work again. It's nice to remember that my brain is occasionally useful - unfortunately not at times like this when I need to be clever and witty. So it goes, as Mr. Vonnegut would have said.>>

They - the infamous 'They' - say that "tomorrow is another day." I'll agree, like Fri-day. All the days of the week have "day" in them, so I think it's a stupid saying. Where do They get off saying stupid things like that anyway?>>

Veteran pop-rock band stops in Athens during tour promoting new CD
September 13, 2007
It's not surprising to figure that Robert Schneider has lofty goals for his band Apples in Stereo's records after noticing that on the new CD, "New Magnetic Wonder," he includes a snippet of a song using a new musical scale that he's invented.>>

We here at AMS HQ would like to extend a big hearty welcome to all of the folks just getting into Athens. This here is the Athens Music Scene, a weekly, somewhat entertaining article about the musical options available to you here in Athens and throughout the region. I am a working musician who daylights as a music writer, among other things. My job here is to notify, edify, obfuscate and irritate you into going out to hear live music.>>

This life seems to be a risky one, and as a person who is not exactly averse at taking certain risks, I will embolden myself toward this adventure: DJs. At the risk of stirring up a hornet's nest that will sting me like the one I ran over with the tractor this morning, I will let loose with a rant, but first, a preface.>>

Morgantown bandleader lets out his Frustrations in latest record
August 16, 2007
I first heard Billy Matheny a couple of months ago at a singer/songwriter benefit concert in Marietta. Like the other artists on the bill, Matheny did only two songs, but he managed to stand out even in a lineup of mostly fine performers. I bought a CD from him after the show, and popped it in the deck on the drive home; by the time I got to Athens, I was a hardcore fan.>>

Last week's feast of music was enough to sate the average individual - luckily we don't have too many average individuals in this town 'cause there is some other seriously great music to listen to in the upcoming week - including two shows on Tuesday. As the summer draws to a close, I can't say we are done with the picture yet. Please join me as we view the Athens Music Scene.>>

In this day and age, we have a tendency to try to shake things off a lot quicker than we perhaps oughta. Life comes at us so fast that we are often at the next thing or two long before we have properly digested the last several things - if we even digested them at all.>>

Last week's Ohio Brew Week culminated in the most successful Boogie on the Bricks ever. Man, do we know how to throw a party. With great bands just lifting people off the ground with their music and the very cooperative weather - not to mention boatloads of finely crafted ales from all over Ohio - I would have to say that we are really getting the hang of this summertime fun sort of thing.>>

I've had a lot of life coming at me lately. I'm fine with that; it's expected. I know that as you get older, people tend to die and end up in the hospital and get sick and all of that crap. I mean, Leighton's First Law is: "The only absolute is uncertainty, and I'm not too sure about that." That said, there are a few things that I do have trouble with.>>
