Hot Tuna Web tutorial evolves into tribute duo

May 31, 2007

An entertaining duo project connected to Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch is on tap to open for the Royales this Friday at the Casa Cantina.

The Break Down Way Boys consist of David Wolff on acoustic guitar and Athens' own Roman Warmke on the bass. They will perform 10 songs from Acoustic Hot Tuna's repertoire. (Hot Tuna is the legendary Jefferson Airplane spin-off band composed of Kaukonen and Jack Casady.)

The name "Break Down Way Boys" comes from the Web site these two, in conjunction with Kaukonen, operate online at http://www.breakdownway.com. According to a news release, the Web site is a member-based subscription site that allows music students to log in and learn Hot Tuna songs via streaming video at home at their own pace.

Since 2002, Break Down Way has expanded its offerings, pushing out dozens of new lessons every year, offering an online forum for students to discuss the intricacies of each song. Recently, the site featured an "Online Acoustic Blues Guitar Challenge," where anyone can submit a video of them playing an acoustic finger-picking song to the contest judges, with the winner receiving a free weekend with Kaukonen studying at the Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp.

Wolff, a retired investment banker from New York City, and talented acoustic guitarist, founded Break Down Way in 2002 when Kaukonen pointed him to local Web design company, Eden Marketing, owned by Athens native Roman Warmke. Eden created the Web site's functionality, Wolff and Kaukonen supplied the creativity, and Break Down Way was born. Wolff and Warmke became good friends through their work together, according to the release.

The duo's 10-song, all-acoustic Hot Tuna "tribute" set will include Wolff playing the part of Kaukonen and Warmke playing the part of Casady, minus the "up and down" eyebrows, said the news release.

Break Down Way Boys go on at 10 p.m., with the Royales to follow thereafter.
