Exhibit honors local vets of Korean, Vietnam wars

The Athens County Military  Museum's 2007 exhibit, "Korea and Vietnam: Athens County Remembers," opens today, Flag Day, the Athens County Historical Society & Museum recently announced.

The exhibit opens today from 4-7 p.m. at Military Museum, 145 Columbus St. in Nelsonville. It honors Athens County veterans involved in the Korean War and the Vietnam War and also the humanitarian work carried out by local residents. The public is invited to attend.

According to a press release, "Korea and Vietnam: Athens County Remembers" is unique in many ways. First, the exhibit mirrors the timeframe represented in the Historical Society & Museum's current exhibit, "Penny loafers, Camelot and Dissent: Athens County's Recent Past," which explores Athens County during the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

Both exhibits are aimed at following the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums' current collections campaign, which asks county historical societies and museums to begin actively collecting items from the recent past, including materials from the 1930s through the 1980s. Collecting items from this timeframe offers county museums the opportunity to learn how to preserve and store items made from man-made material such as plastics and vinyl.

Because the Korean and Vietnam Wars are part of recent history, few donations from these conflicts have been donated to the Historical Society & Museum's military collection, said the release. The majority of the items to be displayed in"Korea and Vietnam: Athens County Remembers" are on loan from veterans across the county.

Next, audio oral histories recounting the service of Athens County Vietnam veterans will be available on CD format, and locally produced video productions about service in Vietnam will be on view. The audio oral histories are personal, eyewitness accounts by participating Athens County veterans who talk about their service. Photos of the veterans participating in the project will be on display, along with background information about their lives, said the release.
Museum hours for the Military Museum are Final Fridays in Nelsonville (the last Friday of each month) from June 16 to Nov. 30, 5-8 p.m., and Saturdays from June 17 to Dec. 15 from 2-6 p.m. ??
