Athens Music Scene

By Eric Leighton

August 2, 2007

In this day and age, we have a tendency to try to shake things off a lot quicker than we perhaps oughta. Life comes at us so fast that we are often at the next thing or two long before we have properly digested the last several things - if we even digested them at all.

With things moving at such break-neck speed, I think that we should slow it down to a nice, easy bump-and-grind pace and boogie in the face of life, a nice and dirty dance. I mean, "Dirty Dancing" isn't the favorite movie of every young girl for nothing is it?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it - go out and get your freak on! Dance like your mama ain't watching. Dance like you just don't care. Put yer hands in the air and get it going. I wanna smell them pits 'cause it means you are working. This article will self-destruct in 23 seconds, so read fast!

Casa Cantina

Tonight, The Brevity Thing brings their swampalicious rock and roll to the Casa Cantina. I caught some of these guys the other night. As a trio where everyone sings, they really pull it off. They hit the serious rock and roll classics and interweave their own material seamlessly. Songstress Liz Pahl will open the night with her beautifully haunting music.
Take No Damage and Country Death, both from Columbus, turn up at the Casa on Friday night. TND describes themselves as "poppy-electro-folk-death-hop," and they are throwing a party for the end of the world. CD is from Bloomington, Ind. and offer up kind of trippy country-rock.

Saturday night will be an InterAct Benefit.

Sunday night the Casa has a big showing of out-of-town groups for your folk-rocky-based enjoyment. The Accident That Led Me to the World is a band from Massachusetts that cuts a wide swath through traditional and contemporary music. Nice instrumentations, and I am certain of a good delivery. Grey Milk is a "musical project" also based out of Massachusetts, and Christopher Bell is a multi-instrumentalist out of New York who has many years and miles under his belt.

Mondays are always filled with Rattletrap and friends, and Wednesdays are the Open Stage with Chris Biester.

Jackie O's

There's a chance that Dirty Johnny, aka the Meat, and DJ Barticus will be spinning records at Jackie O's tonight. Stop in and see.

Friday night The McGovern Brothers do their first Friday of the month gig. You bluegrass fans should be delighted.
Saturday night Mister Got Heat brings their good singing, funkified, punkified selves to Jackie O's for a night of fun.
Monday finds me at the helm of the open stage. Tuesday nights are for the Celtic jam, and Wednesday nights are an open jam.

The Union

Red Dahlia returns to the Union tonight to bring you their dark and lovely music. Joining them will be two bands from Columbus, The Phantods, whom I have desired to see for some time, and the band Lo Pan. Lo Pan offers up a melodic sludge that is guaranteed to satisfy.

Friday night, Black Spyral Dancer returns to mesmerize you with their twist and turns and jazz-mentality-jumps-at-metal take on the world. Special guests will be available.

The Spiveys return to Athens Saturday to unleash their musical madness. This band moved to Chicago (?) several years ago but spent plenty of time tearing up Athens before they left. Dropdead Son/Geraldine guitarist Chris Corbin will join three of the original members.

Blue Gator

Saturday night, the Gator presents Burning Down Broadway (a great idea) and the always-moving Jessie Lynn.
The Paranormals have a couple of weeks of open stages left before the Gator does its annual closing-for-a-couple-weeks routine, so stop in and see us some Tuesday.

Rhapsody

Steve Zarate continues his vocal-less musical musings at the Rhapsody Friday night: Fine dining and fine music.

Front Room

Bruce Dalzell has been slaving away at his Friday open mics all summer. Stop in and visit.

Donkey Coffee

Saturday night the Donkey turns in a great evening of music. Veterans Bruce Dalzell, Billy Rhinehart and Pat White all take to the stage to present their individual and unique takes on music. They all have really great songs. Go there!

Uncle Buck's

The Paranormals and banjo slinger PJ Gilmore from The McGovern Brothers will perform at Uncle Buck's Dance Barn on Saturday night. This'll be a good-time hoedown.

Late Night Logan

Logan comes alive during their Late Night Logan events - which take place the first Saturday of every month. Jesse Martin will appear at the Bowen House at 6 p.m. Other musical acts will appear all over town, I imagine.
