Alternative rock artist Ben Folds will perform this Wednesday at Ohio University’s Memorial Auditorium, along with Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins.
The show is sponsored by the University Program Council, which began working through an agency to book Folds last spring, said Molly Hoyt, concerts chair of the organization.
Folds, the former front man of Ben Folds Five, released a new album, “Way to Normal,” on Sept. 30. His show should be a mix of his new music and older songs that many may be familiar with from “Rocking The Suburbs,” according to Hoyt.
Opening the show will be Australian Higgins, who is touring in conjunction with Folds.
“We’re very excited about that (Higgins),” Hoyt said.
The 24-year-old Melbourne native has achieved a good deal of Australian success, according to her Web site, and is growing a fan base in the United States as well. Her second album “On A Clear Day” was released in the U.S. last February.
Hoyt said that Folds came up last spring as a possible entertainment option during UPC executive board discussion. Student polling was conducted as well as “Facebook and MySpace” research, to determine which artists to book this fall.
As of Friday, 1,100 tickets had been sold. MemAud seats 2,000 but Hoyt said UPC’s attendance goal is 1,500. While UPC hopes to break even occasionally, it does not generally make money on its concerts.
“We’re here to program for the students,” Hoyt said.
