Elementary play true collaboration

March 6, 2008

A cast and crew of 100 West Elementary students will perform in “Volcanoes and Beaches” at West Elementary this Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The play is presented by the West Arts Council for Children and portrays both children and adults summoning their inner “merry spirit” and their imaginations to guide themselves toward strengthened purpose and a peaceful heart, according to a press release.

“Volcanoes and Beaches” is an original children’s musical written by West Elementary parent Faith Knutsen, with lyrics and score by Dominika Adamova, the play’s director.

Students, parents, teachers, local artists and other community members assisted in the three-month collaboration. Local musicians Catfish and Junebug arranged the music and helped students make the original recording that has been used in rehearsals and will be available for purchase at the show.

“Volcanoes and Beaches” is a child-focused and child-led production. Students chose roles in acting, dancing, performing in the live-on-stage band, making costumes, set design, lighting and crew. All classes at West, as well as the Kids-On-Campus after-school program, participated in the design of posters, T-shirts, programs and tickets.

Adamova is a professional counselor and the founder of the Appalachian Progressive Education Center, which fosters productions with the same philosophy as “Volcanoes and Beaches.”  Call West Elementary at 593-6866 for more information.
