On Court Street: Late Night

I’ll have a quiet Athens weekend to go, please Print E-mail

After the kegs-and-eggs of Homecoming, the mom-and-dad bar hopping of Parents Weekend and the sheer madness of Halloween in Athens, all that's left to do for this mundane weekend of fall quarter is sleep.

The nightlife in Athens, while always a good time no matter what, comes in waves. The first two weekends of the quarter, underclassmen are breaking in their new fake IDs and tasting O'Betty's, Goodfellas and Big Mamma's Burritos for the first time while the over-21 crowd is reuniting with one another over drink specials uptown. While the weather's warm, the house parties and keggers line Mill Street, and the new residents find out what it’s like to clean up after hundreds of drunken students spill Natty all over their linoleum.

Athens Halloween: Waiting in line has never been such fun Print E-mail

It wasn't the high heels, the makeup or the Strawberry Shortcake costume that made Saturday night memorable - it was the lines, the waiting, and seeing everybody drunk and in costumes while doing it.

The peaceful Halloween in Athens was marked by the crowds, as usual, that filled Court Street. The mass swarms of college students and their friends packed every bar and late-night restaurant in the city. Students that had been partying throughout the day spent the night on the bricks enjoying the sights and sounds of Halloween in Athens.

Ohio University's Homecoming drew in crowds of alumni who filled Court Street all weekend long. The Homecoming Parade cheered on the Bobcat football team, who went on to beat Miami University of Ohio for the fourth consecutive year. Bars opened early Saturday, some at 7 a.m., for the festivities. Alumni came back because "Athens is the happiest place on Earth," and to enjoy the same fun they had as students at OU. The nightlife in Athens was set to the tune of African drums and a piano man, as the musicians played all night long for partiers.

Cougar has rough trip in Parkersburg Print E-mail

I have a red 2000 Mercury Cougar, and that red car now has white paint across the front bumper courtesy of some drunkard in the parking lot of the Thirsty Turtle in Parkersburg, W.Va. Granted, this didn't happen "On Court Street" like the title of this blog would suggest, but the event itself was so enraging that it merits mention in this post.

While drinking and driving is a terrible reality of the nightlife in Athens, Parkersburg and nearly every other town and city in the country, a hit-and-run fender-bender in a bar parking lot is one of the lesser but more annoying negative consequences of a drunk driver.

Which weeknight's the best uptown? Wednesdays, hands down Print E-mail

Every night of the week on Court Street is special in its own way. Mondays are good nights to have the bar to yourself and shake off the first day of work/classes for the week. Tuesdays are another random night to go out that the bars won't be too crowded, but of the weekdays to go out, Wednesdays take the crown. Wednesdays have it all — cheap pizza, uncrowded bars and cheap drinks.

Two days into the school week, a little Court Street fun is necessary. It’s that kind of night when your friends are all ready to get out of the library and relax.
